Foreigners deported

Two Suriname nationals who came and set up business in Jamaica without going through the right protocols will return home next week.

The accused men Anthony Waileung Choi and Yau Keung Choi pleaded guilty to overstaying and working without a work permit when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

The court was told that the men, who are both Chinese by birth, came to the island on January 31, 2008, and were found downtown operating a wholesale in March, although they were to leave the island on March 1.

The two men, through an interpreter, told the court that they were on vacation in the island when they saw the business opportunity and bought the business. They also said they did not know there were procedures they should have been following.

They told the court that they had purchased plane tickets to return home on April 23 and wanted bail until they leave the island.

Resident Magistrate Glen Brown granted their bail request. He, however, said the men had to return next Wednesday when they were scheduled to leave the island and the court would ensure they departed.

The men were each granted $20,000 bail with surety to return on April 23.
