Strong police presence in August Town

A strong detachment of police and soldiers continues to maintain a strong presence in the August Town community, St Andrew, following a flare-up of violence.

On Monday, two teenagers were shot, one fatally, by gunmen in Goldsmith Villa, August Town, Kingston 7.

Dead is Jerome Edwards, 19, of Goldsmith Villa, while injured is a 15-year-old male of a Bryce Hill Road address.

Police reports are that about 12:05 p.m., the teens were walking near a quarry in the area, when several explosions were heard. It was subsequently discovered that they had been shot.

Teen died

Edwards died on the spot while the 15-year-old was taken to hospital where he was admitted in serious condition.

Inspector Robert Sewell, sub-officer in charge of August Town, said from information received, the shooting on Monday was a reprisal for the murder of a taxi driver from Bryce Hill Road a month ago, and another resident from Bedward Crescent about two weeks ago.

He said the police are appealing to residents to come forward with information. He also urged residents not to commit reprisals for the shootings.

In the meantime he said residents were "staying off the road" and things had been quiet since Monday night.
