April 9, 1998

Northern Ireland's political leaders overcame last minute hitches and approved an agreement on the British province's future designed to end nearly 30 years of sectarian violence. The deal was hailed by weary negotiators as a historic first step on the road to a permanent peace settlement.

After decades of bloody warfare, there was finally a significant step towards peace between the Catholic Nationalists who wanted a whole Ireland, and the Protestant Unionists, who wanted to remain a part of the United Kingdom.

Now

In 2007, the rival groups, finally decided to form a power-sharing government which may also see an end to the sectarian violence, as paramilitary groups on both sides also agreed to lay down their arms.
