Gayle fined for slow over-rate

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC)

West Indies captain Chris Gayle has been fined 70 per cent of his match fee for his team's slow over-rate during the second Digicel Test match against Sri Lanka.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee Chris Broad ruled that Gayle's West Indies side "breached Level 2.11 of the ICC Code" which relates to unfair play due to the West Indies bowling their overs too slowly.

Although Gayle pleaded not guilty, the verdict was issued following a hearing conducted by Broad after play concluded on Sunday, the ICC stated yesterday in a press release.

The other players in the West Indies team were each fined 35 per cent of their match fees for the same offence after the team was found to have been six overs short of the required over-rate.

"During the hearing, neither the captain, coach nor manager, was able to persuade me that the shortfall in overs was beyond their control or that the allowances permitted to teams by the match officials were not appropriate," said Broad.

ODI squad

Meanwhile, the West Indies cricket selectors announced a 16-member squad for the three-match Digicel one-day international (ODI) series against Sri Lanka.

From the 13-man unit picked for the second Test this past weekend, spinner Amit Jaggernauth has been dropped and four players have been brought in - wicket-keeper/batsman Patrick Browne, batsmen Runako Morton and Keiron Pollard and the all-rounder Darren Sammy.

The first Digicel ODI will be played at Trinidad and Tobago's Queen's Park Oval on Thursday, April 10, with the second Digicel ODI at the same venue on Saturday.

The final match will be a day/night contest at Beausejour Stadium in St Lucia on Tuesday, April 15.

SQUAD: Chris Gayle (captain), Ramnaresh Sarwan (vice-captain), Sulieman Benn, Patrick Browne, Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Fidel Edwards, Runako Morton, Keiron Pollard, Daren Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Darren Sammy, Marlon Samuels, Devon Smith, Jerome Taylor.
