Poor winners

The Editor, Sir:

I would first like to congratulate St Jago High School on its victory in the recently concluded School's Challenge Quiz Competition. The best team deservedly won. However, during the speech by the captain, I was perturbed, to say the least, he sunk to a level unbecoming of a leader.

The members of each team represent the crème de la crème of the school population and St Jago's captain let them down by being vindictive in his speech when he said the brave yielded and the utmost reached the highest. The statement was completely juvenile and unnecessary. When vendettas seem to be the order of the day in our society, those comments were irresponsible.

As future leaders, these young men are supposed to set an example for others to follow. It just goes to show the level which our society has reached with a speech like that being presented on national television.

Putting all that aside, the speech was a good one. I am just disappointed about some unnecessary utterances made. Once again, congratulations St Jago on your victory. Just be careful next time and don't step on any toes.

I am, etc.,

TEKEL INGRAM
