Students and teachers of Independence City Primary wore colours of the national flag and traditional bandanas in recognition of Jamaica Day recently.
The day's activities went under the theme: 'Celebrating Jamaica: Celebrating Me, Celebrating my School'.
Coordinator of the day's activities, Celene Kenwood-Mais, said that it was a day well spent as students were given a trip down memory lane. The youngsters learnt about the traditional foods and household items and clothing of their ancestors.
The day's activities started with a special devotion, where children performed in song, drama, speech and dance.
The award-winning Independence City dance troupe did not disappoint, dancing to one of Bob Marley's hits in a colourful display.
The drama piece titled: Peacemaker by grade four also gripped their peers. During the play, a girl tried desperately to stop a fight and encouraged her friends to in live in peace.

A display was mounted in the school library which was well decorated with national colours. Students were given a tour of the library and shown items used by our foreparents such as cold irons, self-heating irons, pearls, beads, meat grinders, coconut brush, 'dulcimina grip' (travelling suitcase), platform shoes and other things from the past. Traditional food items, such as grater cakes, were also on display.
The students were also shown trophies and medals won over the years by the school, and photos of past principals and how the school looked decades ago.
