Ricardo Handy says he was seeking answers when he went to his ex-girlfriend's house and stole her cellphone. But his behaviour turned out to be costly as he was ordered to buy her a new, 'expensive' phone by the Resident Magistrate.
Handy, who is from a Kingston address, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to larceny from the dwelling.
The court was told that Handy and the complainant were in a relationship and when they broke up, he went to the complainant's house and stole her cellular phone. The complainant made a report to the police who, following investigations, arrested and charged him.
However, when Resident Magistrate Glen Brown asked him about the phone, the accused man said 'because of all that was going on, I was driving around and I saw someone and gave it away".
RM Brown then asked him if he brought any money to court with him. "I don't really have any money right now your honour cause I had to license and insure my car," he said.
The accused was then asked by the RM if he would give away his car, and he responded no. Handy then told the court that he and the complainant had been together for five years and that she had just ended things without giving him an explanation. He added that he was only trying to get an explanation when he took the phone.
Then RM Brown handed down his sentence, which seemed to surprise the accused. "I am going to make you an offer you cannot refuse. You are going to buy her a cellphone, another Motorola phone with camera. You are going to bring it on Friday morning. If you don't bring it you can't go home," RM Brown said.
The accused, after hearing the offer, stood speechless before the court. "Digicel having a sale now, up to 70 per cent off," RM Brown added.
The accused still did not make an attempt to leave so the RM asked, "what you waiting for, applause?" After which an obviously upset Handy left the courtroom. He is to return to court on Friday, March 28, when the matter will be mentioned.
