Eagle eye upon us ...

Once again dancehall events will be put under greater scrutiny because of the irresponsible behaviour of patrons over the weekend.

According to the Tuesday STAR's lead story, one man was killed and eight persons shot and injured at British Link-Up dance on Saturday.

The article further stated that an eyewitness said the shooting began as a result of a dispute over something a girl said.

The article indicated that the four licensed firearms believed to have been used in the shoot-out were seized and are to be tested. This definitely highlights the need for greater gun control and security control especially at events.

Patrons should not have to worry that irresponsible people with weapons will be at an event, putting the lives of others at risk.

Given the fact that patrons at these events usually consume alcohol, which clouds one's judgement, promoters are to ensure that all the necessary steps are taken to prevent patrons from taking weapons into the event.

The article also points to the need for greater gun control by the authorities designated to do so. One has to wonder what sort of screening did these licensed firearm holders undergo before being given their weapons. What sort of sanctions will be brought against them if it is found that they acted irresponsibly and what will be done to prevent this from happening again?

At the end of the day, we cannot stop people from doing stupid things, but when something directly affects the lives of others then all precaution should be taken to ensure that life is given the priority that it deserves.
