Patrons get 'Red' at Beach J'ouvert

Teino Evans, Staff Reporter

RED HEAT: She surely never gambled on her looks. Her smile says it all. - winston sill

It was like the 'Red Sea' had overflowed its banks into the James Bond Beach on Saturday, as hundreds of patrons were camouflaged from head to toe in red paint.

Half naked, gyrating, water-painted patrons, must have had the time of their lives at Bacchanal Jamaica's Beach J'ouvert, held at the venue in Oracabessa, St. Mary. The drinks inclusive event which had energy-filled performances from the likes of Destra and Imaj and Company left everyone 'drunk' from all the fun and soca madness that took place.

Running up to total strangers and dosing them with paint, every man to a woman, even some women dancing closely with other women in plain sight, as if it were the norm, suggested that any and everything was acceptable in the name of fun.

But wait, the attractions were not limited to just action in the crowd, which mainly saw women assuming sexual positions, as they took the ground for a King size bed.

Easy task

When the live performance section got on the way, the energy level had already been high, and it was an easy task for Imaj and Company who maintained that high energy as they remixed Party Like A Rock Star and other hip-hop tunes in between performing some of their soca favourites.

Imaj and Company also had the massive crowd 'drifting' to their left and right, as they demonstrated their new dance called the Bounce and Drift.

After their hour-long performance and a break for patrons to refill their liquor cups and wine and gyrate to the sounds of Renaissance Disco, the main act for the night, Destra and Atlantik took the stage and managed to muster up some more high energy on stage, as she dared Iwa George (who was there as a patron) to "come tes my wine". However, after Destra assumed the position, and rolled her bumper a few times, Iwa only managed to make two steps towards her, pat her butt with his hands before making a hasty retreat backstage.

After Destra failed to be satisfied, she then called for "a Jamaican man to come dance with one of my dancersÉA want a man come represent for Jamaica." The call was taken up by a stocky looking young man, who went up and demonstrated his wine.

Destra later paused during her performance to path the crowd, as she declared, "I not continuing until you path di middle." Then, when the passage was clear, Destra had patrons moving from side to side, with rags and hands waving in the air. It was all part of the soca madness and excitement, as patrons tumbled over each other, while others bumped heads, but there was no fussing and fighting, as all were high on liquor and soca.

When Destra left the stage shortly before 10 p.m., it was time for the selectors to throw in a little dancehall vibe, as females used the opportunity to Wine Pon Di Edge. Some patrons however made an early exit ahead of the mad crowd rush as they attempted to Tek Wey Yuh Self.
