Icah Wilmot continued his spectacular performance in the Jamaica Surfing Association (JSA) 2008 National Open Championship Series, winning the second event at the Makka Surfing Beach in Yallahs, St Thomas, on the weekend.
Thirty local surfers registered for the event which was contested in waist-high wind chop that made things very difficult for
the competitors.
Imani Wilmot and Elim Beckford were the lone female competitors. Wilmot won the event, earning her much needed points.
Twenty-six entrants registered for the men's open event. Icah Wilmot, Luke Williams, Shane Simmonds, Ackeam Phillips and Michael Panton kept the enthusiastic crowd on the beach thoroughly engaged for the duration of the 20-minute final. Each thrilling ride was followed by an equally valiant effort by another one of the finalists.
When the judges scores were tallied, Icah was adjudged the top performer of the day with Williams second, Simmonds third, Phillips fourth and Panton fifth.
The next event of the series will be on June 7, at the Copacabana Surfing Beach in Bull Bay, St Andrew.
