Big money up for grabs

Jimmie, Star Racing Writer

SHANE Ellis and Trevor Simpson are the jockeys punters should watch Saturday afternoon when they go in chase of more than $2.2m in jackpots and carryovers at Caymanas Park.

NATURAL ATLANTA struck at odds of 12-1 in the 1500-metre eighth race to force a $1.687 million Pick-9 carryover.

Both Super-6 bets on the 12-race card were nailed, $53,920 for spotting the first six winners and a whopping $337,651 to winning tickets for races seven to 12.

NATURAL ATLANTA's upset also forced a superfecta carryover of $98,787, adding to Saturday's Super-6 guarantee of $500,000 to spot the winners of races five to 10.

Title-chasing Ellis and Simpson should share at least four winners Saturday, making life much easier for punters hunting solid bankers to make a winning start to the Easter holiday carnival of racing, which continues Monday.

Simpson should land the fourth and seventh races aboard STAR OF THE SEA and OLE KING COLE, respectively, whereas Ellis looks good astride MACHISMO in the fifth and RAMPAGE in the 10th.

A three-year-old filly, STAR OF THE SEA debuts over 1000 metres straight where she has been working well, beating stablemate ZHENG HE, who was also a winner on debut. Trained by Billy Williams, STAR OF THE SEA clocked 1:01.1 from the gate last Saturday morning, putting away ZHENG HE, and should get the better of another debutante, THE PRINCIPAL, conditioned by Wayne DaCosta.

Ellis, who will start the day four wins behind suspended champion jockey Omar Walker, should make use of his rival's absence, starting with Anthony Nunes' MACHISMO at 1100 metres.

Fitted with a tongue-tie, MACHISMO galloped the distance in 1:07.3 last Sunday morning, a super preparation against non-winners-of-two.

Close examination of MA-CHISMO's form shows she had no chance against stablemates PREMIUM VELOCITY and ROYAL IMAGE in her last two races and had won by almost 10 lengths when beating maidens on her previous outing.

Simpson should complete his double with OLE KING COLE, who gets the perfect trip of 1400 metres in the seventh event as there is no pace in the race to keep him from pouncing in the stretch run.

Down in class among $380,000 claimers, OLE KING COLE should frank the form he showed when finishing a half-length second to UNCLE D & ME over 1200 metres on a $440,000 tag on February 9.

Stick with Ellis and RAMPAGE in the 10th at 1000 metres round despite CLOCK WORK's dip in the handicaps. When they last met, CLOCK WORK carried 60.5 kilos, six pounds more than RAMPAGE and was beaten by almost eight lengths at 1400 metres.

CLOCK WORK returns 12 pounds lighter whereas RAMPAGE has gone down by three. With the distance reduced, CLOCK WORK appears to have a grand chance. However, RAMPAGE appeared to be toying with him that afternoon and although sitting at the top of the scale with 57.0, compared to CLOCK WORK's 55.0, should use superior fitness to prevail in a stretch battle.
