Has dancehall culture done Jamaica more harm than good?

Patrons at a stage show - file

We're back! THE STAR poll is here once again and, dare we say, better than ever. We hit the streets with all the juiciest questions about sex, obeah, music, religion and much more, and now we're ready to give you the results. Prepare to be shocked and amused like never before.

Last time we asked persons if they believe that the confrontational lyrics used by some deejays, have affected our morals. To follow up on this, we went out and asked :

Do you think the whole dancehall culture has done Jamaican society more harm than good or has it not had that much effect on Jamaican society?

It seems the public is almost split on this issue as the results were very close. However, a few more people seem to think that dancehall has not had that much effect on society. It is no surprise that the results were this close, as dancehall has as manysupporters as detractors.

While there are many who think dancehall is a product of hell, there are many people whose lives depend on this and who see it as simply a reflection of our culture. Whether we find some lyrics offensive or not, it is truly up to us to decide whether we are going to allow the lyrics of a particular song to influence our lifestyles.

The poll was conducted on January 28 -29 by Johnson Survey Research Limited

Sample size: 1008 residents
