A section of Kew Road, St Andrew. - Norman Grindley
AS PART of our mission to be the People Paper, THE WEEKEND STAR has been highlighting problem areas across the island. Our reporter, Carolyn Johnson, along with photographer Norman Grindley, will focus on a particular area until the problem is fixed. Now we will have a rough idea of how long the relevant authorities take to deal with some of the problems affecting our country.
It's all a matter of resources, or lack thereof. This is the explanation Linton Evans, town clerk at the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KASC) gave for the deplorable condition of Kew Road, off Maxfield Avenue, St Andrew.
Due to this, there have been no developments to rubble road since we started featuring it two weeks ago. Neither have the trucks that line one side of the road, referred to as the 'good side of the road' by a caller.
However, if it is at all possible that the boulders edging out from asphalt can get any sharper or the sunk holes deeper, that has been done. These holes are still filled with water which masks the depth drivers fall to before revving up to cruise on rocks.
Evans said, however, that the Procurement Committee has authorised a roving project, which will patch many roads in the Corporate Area. Though Kew Road will require complete rehabilitation, he says it will be patched for the short term, as this is the best they can do at the moment.
"I don't know if we can keep asking the citizens to bear with us, but we are trying," he told THE WEEKEND STAR.
So, until April, when the roving team begins their patchwork, drivers will just have to sit tight and brace the hill an gully ride.
