Jail not so sweet

A man accused of stealing sugar from a warehouse spent his 24th birthday behind bars when he was ordered to remain in police custody on Wednesday in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court.

He is Chevell Grant of Anchovy, St James, who is charged with warehouse breaking and larceny in relation to an incident last February.

It is alleged that he and other persons stole 49 bags of sugar, valued at $107,000, from a bakery warehouse in Anchovy.

The court heard that on February 28, the complainant left 250 bags of sugar valued at $400,000 at his warehouse. The Anchovy police intercepted a van with three men subsequent to the complainant leaving the goods there. The accused and one of the men ran from the vehicle, while the police held on to the third man.

The man. who was held. took the police to the warehouse and confessed to taking the bags of sugar.

The police subsequently contacted the owner who visited the station on March 2 and identified the items as his. Grant was apprehended on March 7.

He denied the allegations and expressed the desire to get a legal aid lawyer.

He returns to court on March 26.
