The Science of determining a hit

Teino Evans, Staff Reporter

Determine

Dancehall artiste Deter-mine, says he has worked a good Science as not only has his recent single been a major success for him, but artistes like Guidance, whom he mentioned in his song, have been making good on a counteraction.

The song originally sparked much controversy, as a number of artistes who were mentioned in the song did not take kindly to Determine's Science, as lines like, 'nobody cyan tell mi sey dem nuh science Alliance, di friendship mash down, pop down like appliance', 'Beenie Man get married, dat look like science', 'a who a talk bout dem science Guidance, tun him inna one hitta like a wear out pants' are a few of the blows delivered by Determine in the song.

However, according to Determine, "is just doing something different in the business, giving some drama. Mi jus a carry in a different vibe in the music because everybody deh pon di same topic."

Big career push

Determine admits that the song really gave his career a big push. "An fi know sey inna dis time wey suh much big artiste deh bout an suh much big song a play, it really good -.a long time mi a sing, mi nuh know why mi song dem nah connect, a tru mi nah sing gun song an bout unda di girl dem," he said.

In addressing those artistes he may have offended in the song, Determine says he bears no ill will for the them. "Da song here is not a feelings song, is not a to di worl song, is a roun di worl song - same way mi think bout di artiste dem before mi write di song, a same way mi think bout dem now."

He continued, "mi know sey me always get left out, suh me did haffi sen dem a signal an mek dem know sey dem likkle bredda still deh yah, suh don't lef mi inna di dungeon.

"The song was just sending out a signal without disrespecting anybody. If yuh really indulge, den yuh nah guh really hold nuh positive vibe from it," he said.

He also pointed to the fact that Guidance had benefited, as his counteraction song was getting airplay.

"Is a good Science drop, is not a bad science drop. Si Guidance get a buss out a it, last time mi deh a Early Mondays, afta dem play my song, Guidance song play, an si Guidance a get bare mention ya now," Determine said.

And, as far as Guidance's counteraction song goes, Determine says, "mi nuh tek it nuh way, but mi really feel a way sey him carry mi guh all di way down a carnal abuse. Me is a yute weh live wid my pickney dem, a me grow dem. One a one year six months (Zaire), one a eight (Akilah) and one a 14 (Runkus) - him a deejay to."

However, he says Guidance's song does not have the same effect as his because it does not seem plausible. "People nuh know me as dah type a person wey him a talk bout - but a mi bredda same way."

Not happy

When contacted, Guidance said he was not too happy about being mentioned in Determine's song and his counteraction song, Destruction Tek Yuh was just to prove that he should not be undermined.

"Di part wey him (Determine) a talk bout one hit an ring out like one pants, mi neva like da part deh, cause lots of big song mi sing, but a jus tru promotion. Him shouldn't mek di system trick him, cause him know sey di whole a wi talented. A me tell di people dem, love what dem got, next year nah guh easy, suh how Determine fi put me inna him obeah song," he said.

A section of Guidance's song says, 'A nuh me mek destruction tek yuh, yuh guh St Mary mek di monkey demyuh, waan look yuh boss wife him dunk yuh, call Guidance name jus won't help yuh ... wey di Rasta dread a try I.'

Guidance says as far as he knows, "right now is a lyrical ting, but mi nuh know wah him (Determine) a deal wid."

In the meantime, Guidance has been enjoying some major airplay, both on radio and in the dancehall, as he says, "It play an pull up all bout, a Stone Love, Hot Monday, Passa - di people dem love it. Dem all a sey bwoy Guidance yuh give it to him."

He added, "people a tell me sey fi prepare cause Determine forwarding again, but mi fans dem fi know sey mi have it lock."
