Artiste: Various from Putumayo World Music
Album: Latin Reggae
Genre: Latin reggae
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Latin Reggae is not something that one hears everyday in Jamaica. Most persons do not know that people in the Latin and Spanish communities are reggae artistes. There is also the common misconception that those in these communities only do reggaeton which is much faster than the authentic reggae songs that are compiled on this album.
The songs on the disc are quite smooth and easy to listen to. While it is more suited for a Spanish-speaking person who would be able to translate the content, this does not detract from the music itself.
The artistes seem to have a Jamaican accent and their voices thoroughly ride the rhythms. Their voices blend nicely and it is obvious that they have strong vocal skills. However, there is no voice that stands out above the others.
The instruments accompanying the music are more soothing than the actual vocals. It is the type of music that one can listen to while studying or relaxing. Slow beats are in almost every song and there is also some ska and rocksteady influence on the album. Rock and flamenco are also obvious influences.
Overall, the album can be a good listen.
