According to the lead story in Wednesday's STAR, the police have decided to withhold permits from promoters wishing to host 'after-champs' parties.
The officers say this move is in a bid to prevent violence among clashing schools and students, something which has become synonymous with the staging of the event.
Although this could be seen as a responsible, proactive move on the part of the police, the promoters of these events are crying foul. The STAR spoke with two such promoters who were not only disappointed with the decison, but upset that it was only communicated to them a few days before the event.
As expected, these men have invested millions of dollars in promoting and organising these events, and to learn that their plans may not be executed is understandably hard to come to grips with.
The police are trying to keep the peace, which is always good, especially since it seems the 'champs fever' affects the normal thought process of some students. However, the promoters are trying to provide a legal service and have put much into this service.
Some kind of compromise needs to be reached so both parties can be equally satisfied.
