Worrying trend of violence against women

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer
Spanish Town

The killing of Joan Taylor-Rogers close to the Angels Primary School in St Catherine has pushed the number of females murdered in the St Catherine north division since the start of 2008 to six and this is worrying several persons.

"We are really not satisfied with the violence that is being meted out to our women, which resulted in death or maiming and disfiguration," remarked Irish Lewis, one of the many females who turned up at the scene where Taylor-Rogers was killed. "Bwoy, woman nu safe again" said another.

Taylor-Rogers, 48, of Eltham Park, St Catherine, were dropping off school children when she was shot dead by gunmen. The Spanish Town police say they are investigating several other killings of women. On February 13, Marlene Archer Greenland, 48, was chopped to death at her home on Walks Road.

Stephalita Clarke, 46, was shot to death in Greendale moments after she dropped off her children at school. Yvonne Patterson of Riversdale was shot to death at her home on January 5. On January 13, Vernet Lewis, 42, of Sligoville, was chopped to death and on January 3 Norma Morrison, a 50-year-old higgler, was shot in the Linstead market.

Several personnel at the police station said that the trend is also baffling investigators.
