A man who thought he was the father of the baby he had been taking care of for several months, found out that it was not his on Wednesday.
The father found out after Resident Magistrate Glen Brown ordered Jacqueline Thompson, who was facing the court for child stealing, to tell him the truth about the child. Thompson remained silent.
Resident Magistrate Glen Brown asked the man, "Who is the father of the child?"
"Me, sir," he responded while holding the child in his hands.
RM Brown then allowed Nadine Appleby, the co-accused and the child's real mother to take the child and stand across from the accused. Following which RM Brown asked Appleby who the father of the child was. She told the court that the father was not at court.
deception
RM Brown told the accused that the child was not his and that Thompson had been deceiving him with the child.
Thompson and Appleby are both charged with conspiracy.
It was alleged that Appleby and Thompson hatched a plan to use Appleby's one-year-old son to get money from the man. Thompson had reportedly lost her child and the two agreed that she would pretend that Appleby's son was hers, so she could get money from her child's father.
It is alleged that Thompson took the child from Appleby some days ago and failed to return him. Appleby reportedly called the police and reported the child missing. The plot was discovered when the police began their investigations.
RM Brown made a 'no order' against Appleby and ordered a probation report for Thompson, noting that something else was wrong for her to do this. In addition, he noted that he will not be sending her to jail. He also granted her bail and set a mention date of March 19 when he will sentence her.
