Education Minister, Andrew Holness has announced that his senior advisor, Alphansus Davis, will be at the Christiana High School for two weeks to work with the board chairman and principal in an effort to effect proper discipline at that institution.
The move came a day after a confrontation between a teacher and two students.
Speaking with reporters on February 22 at the school after he met with teachers, parents, students and representatives of the board, the Minister noted that the matter that had led to the stoppage of classes the previous day had been resolved.
"I am pleased to report that the teachers, students, parents and I have met and the incident that accurred earlier this week was discussed and there is a resolution to that problem. As we go forward Mr Alphansus Davis will be at the school on my behalf to manage the discipline problem that exists here, and secure and preserve a learning environment that will enhance education," Mr Holness said.
He added that the ministry's intervention is a major one and will include personnel from the Guidance Counselling Unit, and other persons working with disruptive students. Davis will also pay special attention to the function of the school board.
Meanwhile, member of parliament for North Eastern Manchester and Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Audley Shaw said there was an urgent need for additional classroom spaces. To this end, he disclosed that he would be seeking to relocate the school as the present site lacks land space for expansion.
"What we have now is a doubling of the original capacity of the school, and I am actively searching for locations where we can build one or two new schools to accommodate the current population. At that time we will have an environment with a single-shift system where we can provide all the extra-curricula activities and ensure that we deal with the socialisation and resocialisation of our students," Mr Shaw informed.
Several parents and teachers expressed their support for the minister's swift intervention and indicated that they will cooperate.
