Ganga: Mohammed is a unique player

Left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed of Trinidad and Tobago.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC)

Captain Daren Ganga has praised match-winning spinner Dave Mohammed after he led Trinidad & Tobago to a comprehensive victory over Jamaica in the finals of the Stanford 20/20 series in Antigua on Sunday.

Mohammed grabbed four for 20 to baffle the Jamaicans who were routed for 91 off 16.1 overs. In reply, T&T romped to victory at 94 for one off 9.2 overs with William Perkins hitting an unbeaten 50 and Lendl Simmons, 26 not out.

"Dave is a unique type of bowler and batsmen. The way he plays his cricket is unique in itself, even the way he celebrates after taking a wicket," Ganga said.

"Sometimes, he has problems communicating but I have been playing cricket with him since secondary school, so I understand him well. He is really a good bowler and was the star for us during this tournament.

"Every time I called on him to make something happen, he did and for this I must say a heartfelt thanks."

Mohammed removed Chris Gayle, Danza Hyatt, Carlton Baugh Jr and Jerome Taylor in quick fashion during the final to set up T&T's win.

Gayle, the Jamaican captain, also lauded Mohammed's effort saying: "Dave Mohammed was really unplayable in the game. He really outfoxed our players and I must say well done to him.

"Time and time again, he proved to be difficult to pick and he kept bowling the googly, which gave all the problems. He is really a good bowler and I will like to see him move from strength to strength with his bowling."

Mohammed has failed to consistently find favour with West Indies selectors and has played just five Tests and five one-day internationals since making his debut in 2004.
