Beaten mid-season finalist Georges Valley took over the lead in the Captain's Bakery Manchester Major League when Errol Belnavis' goal gave them a 1-0 win over Mandeville United as the return phase of the competition got under way last weekend.
Kendal, the surprise package this season who barely missed out of the mid-season final following a gutsy 1-3 lost to Georges Valley, again showed their potential, beating the previous leaders New Green 1-0 to jump to second on 15 points, one behind the new leaders.
New Green, the mid-season champions, have shown indif-ferent form, unable to stamp their class on the league having already won the knockout cup. They now find themselves in a three-way tie for third place with dark horse Porus and Downs, who have claimed seven points from their last three games.
Porus, with first-half goals from Mark Thompson and Devon Nangle, had beaten Greenvale 2-1 for whom George Wisdom scored a 62nd-minute con-solation. In perhaps the most exciting match of the round, Mile Gully and Downs drew 2-2. Gary McDonald had given Downs a 1-0 lead on the edge of half time and Danville Cornwall seemed to have secured the three points early with another strike in the 60th minute. The home side had other ideas and rallied to earn a share of the points when Rayon Blythe (73rd) and McKandy Gayle (83rd) scored.
The competition continues on Sunday with the following matches: Downs vs Georges Valley; Mandeville United vs Greenvale at deCarteret College; New Green vs Mile Gully at Hanbury; and Porus vs Kendal.
