Psychiatric evaluation for rum thief

Rasbert turner, Spanish Town

Richardo Smith who is accused of stealing one bottle of Appleton from a Super Plus food store was very polite when he pleaded guilty for the offence.

Smith appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday to answer to the charge of simple larceny after he allegedly went into Super Plus Portmore Pines Plaza and stole the liquor.

Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar asked "are you guilty of simply larceny Mr Smith?" Smith responded; "I have intention and I later realise that after a stole the rum, the security was very alert and was in fact warning me not to pick it up."

His plea drew laughter as the investigating officer explained that Smith went into the supermarket on Valentine's Day and was observed moving out of the store with a bottle of Appleton Special. He was accosted by the security and the police were called in and he was charged.

Having heard the allegations and observing Smith's actions in the dock, the Resident Magistrate ordered that he be remanded for psychiatric evaluation and return to court on March 18.
