Naggo Head top Portmore 5-4 in penalty shoot-out

Anthony Minott, Freelance Writer

Naggo Head surprised Portmore United 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out to win the St Catherine Co-operative Credit Union/Happy Sutherland Knock-out final at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday. Both teams were locked at 0-0 after regulation and extra time.

In the play-off for third place, Bodles beat D.B. Basovak 2-0 courtesy of a double strike from Sheldon Campbell.

Jason Grant, coach of Naggo Head, said that team chemistry played a big part in their victory.

"We have been working hard, and the team is now going forward. The team is disciplined and we are now getting the results. We have unity and love, we are not just a team we are a family," he added.

Shanon Faulknor was the hero for Naggo Head after he struck home the sixth penalty for his team to send his fans into wild celebrations. Dayvion Moyston, Andrew Bravo, Jerome Wedderburn and Layton Barrett also converted their penalties. Naggo Head pressured Portmore from the opening whistle and could have taken the lead midway the first half but forward Rohan Cato missed the chance.

Portmore responded well in the second half forcing Naggo Head into their own half, but faulty shooting let them down.

Wolry Wolfe was unlucky not to score for Portmore in the first period of extra time when his blast from a distance crashed against the post and came back into play. The contest was forced into the dreaded penalty kicks, where Naggo Head, the more composed of the two teams, came out on top.

"I am disappointed. We came here to retain our title but they (Naggo Head), fought really hard and came out on top," Linval Dixon, coach of Portmore, said.
