Mother jailed for negligence

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

Spanish Town

A mother who failed to report to the police that her 14-year-old daughter had given birth to a child after being involved, with a man, was sentenced to six months hard labour for negligence under the Child Protection Act.

The St Catherine woman, the court learnt, failed to inform the authorities that her daughter was involved, although she was a minor.

Detective Corporal Kirk Roache of the Guanaboa Vale police told the court that last month he received information that the child had given birth to a baby, and several attempts to get the whereabouts of the baby's father proved futile. It was later discovered that the mother knew about the relationship. She was charged with negligence.

The baby's father was caught by the police on January 26, hiding under a bed. When he appeared in court his lawyer, Lancelot Clarke Jr., made a successful bail application and he was granted $100,000 bail, on condition that he reports to the Guanabo Vale Police Station. He returns to court on March 6.
