For the first time since entering the TVJ's Schools' Challenge Quiz competition in 2001, Jonathan Grant high has advanced to the second round of the competition.Although the team was disappointed about their performance, they were still happy to be in the next round. Laurie Bell, one of the team's coaches, said, "We are proud to be advancing to the second round for the first time since we have been entering the competition, and we are confident that we will put up a better showing in that round."
Jonathan Grant advanced to the next round after they defeated Albert Town High from Trelawny 26 -13 on Wednesday.
From the first section Jonathan Grant led the match scoring eight points to Albert Town's five. Jonathan Grant's score was later reduced to seven after judges decided not to award them the point for a general knowledge question.
Section two of the match saw both teams trying to increase their scores, and when it had ended Jonathan Grant had 20 points while Albert Town had 11.
Albert Town missed one key chance to increase its score when it gave the plural for furniture as 'furnitures'. The correct answer was, in fact, furniture.
As the third section began Jonathan Grant lost yet another point but gained another, and so maintained their 20-point score.
Section three was largely positive for the Jonathan Grant team, who got most of the questions they attempted correct, to end with 26 points. Albert Town also got many correct but lost almost as many points to finish with 13 points.
The Albert Town team, however, was more grateful for the experience they gained from playing Jonathan Grant High. "It was a fairly good match, the experience was good and we learnt a lot," Judeine McLeod, captain of the team said.
She said they will be training harder for next year so they can put up a better fight.
