St Catherine man arrested for stolen appliances

By Rasbert Turner, Star Writer
Spanish Town

Swift action by the Spanish Town police on Wednesday led to the recovery of several stolen pieces of jewellery and appliances and one man taken into custody in connection with the recovery.

Reports are that about 4 p.m., a police party was on patrol in the Lauristan area of St. Catherine, when they spotted a Toyota motor car, with three men on board, parked at a certain location.

The action of the men caused the police to approach the vehicle. The men immediately pulled guns and starting firing at the police, who returned the fire.

Two of the men ran into nearby bushes and escaped, while the third drove away the car. However the vehicle was intercepted near Thompson Pen and the man whose name has been withheld was taken to the Spanish Town Police Station.

After a search of the vehicle several television sets, portable DVD players, DVD's, cell phones, several watches, rings and other items of jewellery were found.

According to Detective Sergeant Paul Thomas of the Spanish Town CIB, the man's name will not be released as he will be facing an identification parade.

"We are also pursuing the other persons who engaged the police in a shoot-out as this kind of action can not be allowed to go away like that.

Meanwhile Thomas is asking persons who might have lost any of these items to call 481-6366.
