Meadowbrook High School yesterday advanced to the second round of Television Jamaica's Schools' Challenge Quiz after a convincing win over Seaforth High School. The St. Andrew-based team took home victory with a score of 36-13.
In the first segment of the match, both teams seemed to be on even ground. This would soon change, however, when Meadowbrook asserted their dominance in the second and third sections. The score at the end of the first segment was Seaforth on five and Meadowbrook on 10 after moving up from eight.
The start of the second segment was when it all went downhill for Seaforth. Though they tried to answer the questions posed, they simply were unable to keep up with their opponents. They only managed to gain eight points during this section, while Meadowbrook gained 17. The point standing at this time was Meadowbrook on 27, Seaforth on 13.
Mechanical failure
A mechanical failure forced the third segment of this match to be played with the alternating format that is used in the first segment and not the traditional buzzers. This, according to the stipulations of the rule book. In this segment, Meadowbrook gained nine additional points, while Seaforth gained none. In the end, their score was still 13 while Meadowbrook was way ahead on 36.
Ricardo Forsythe, coach of the Seaforth team was obviously disappointed by his team's performance and said, "It was a very well-played match by Meadowbrook. We were beaten in some sections and maybe it was because of nervousness, but we could have done much better."
Coach of the Meadowbrook team, Clement Gordon, said, "I think the team did reasonably well. I expected them to get some higher scores. They did very well considering that we did not practise without a buzzer in the third section."
