Preliminary match a one-sided affair

Jonique Gaynor, Staff Reporter

In the first match of the preliminary round of Television Jamaica's Schools' Challenge Quiz, The Hampton School faced off against Brown's Town High. In what was a mostly one-sided affair, the school from St. Elizabeth walked away with a 50-24 victory.

The first section of the match was perhaps the most exciting as at this stage both teams were evenly matched. Both performed fairly well in this section and at the end, Hampton was ahead on 10, and Brown's Town High was close behind on seven.

In the second section of the match, the Hampton team asserted their dominance and pulled ahead. Apart from mistakenly identifying the 'crown prince of reggae' as Bob Marley, they gave a credible performance and in the end, earned a total of 16 points in this segment. Brown's Town, on the other hand, earned 11 additional points, bringing their total at the end of this section to 18. Hampton was ahead on 26.

Section three was where the Hampton team really pushed forward. The girls attempted 12 questions and managed to answer them all correctly, almost doubling their score. Though not as quick on the buzzer and not as successful in this section, the team from Brown's Town maintained their composure and managed to earn six additional points. At the sound of the final bell, The Hampton School came out victorious with a convincing 50 points, while Brown's Town High was on 24.

Coach of the Hampton team, Francis Blythe, said he was proud of his team. " The Hampton school is returning after a year's break. We started with fresh persons and we just started training two months. They have developed and have matured. They did very well. There were some questions that they should have answered , but I guess anxiety got the better of them. They did well and we're hoping to continue like this."

The Hampton School team members: Yanique Henry (captain), Daynia Farquarson, Jervene Simpson, Alexa Simpson.

The Brown's Town High team members: Reynaldo Hyatt, Andre Hamilton, Marco Palmer (captain), Andre Yee Shui.
