Councillor supports cops

Rasbert Turner, Portmore Star writer

With the St. Catherine South police seizing two guns, including an AK47, in the Newland community, the councillor for the area said that he would be supporting the police, once their actions were positive.

Andrew Wheatley told THE PORTMORE STAR that the residents of the community were fed up with the level of crime, and the gun seizure is no different. He said he hoped to put plans in place to help some of the youths in the community to put their lives on a positive path.

Meanwhile, operations officer for St. Catherine South, Deputy Supt. Clive Blair, said the police would be continuing their efforts in several communities in Portmore, including Newland.

"On Sunday, we seized a 9mm pistol from a juvenile and a 22-year-old man. And, on Wednesday we seized an AK47 from a male in the community, and we will not stop until we get all the guns that are out there," he said

He said that since the start of the year, 65 guns had been seized by the police in that division, which represented five more than the corresponding period last year.
