A Rally bopping musical - Music Video review

By Kandré McDonald, Freelance Writer

The Story, a musical done by Rally Bop and shot by high profile videographer Jay Will, is now the latest buzz among dancehall fans after the video recent local ttelevision premier.

"The video is like none other that has been done in dancehall," reasoned video director Jay Will, who has several projects to his credit including Vegas' Hot Wuk, Tek Weh Yuhself, Constant Spring, Baby Cham's Weh Dem Feel Like, Voicemail's Wacky Dip, Shaggy's Church Heathen and Bonafide Girl, Beenie Man's Trend Setter and Dreaming of You featuring Alaine, among many others.

Speaking with THE STAR, Rally Bop noted that the project actually took over two years to put together.

"I spend a lot of quality time, trying to ensure that I get the right formula when we began this project. I wanted it to be something that I could look back on and be proud of," said Rally Bop. He continued: "I actually played five different characters in the video and had to use some rather unique deejaying skill to give each character a certain identity."

The project actually started out when Rally Bop decided to challenge Jay Will. He wanted to give him something that would have him thinking hard.

Laughing, Jay noted: "They wanted to challenge me to create a video like none other. Rally actually sat down and wrote a creative song that really shows his qualities as an artiste. He wanted me to put together a story, in which he played several roles, where he is actually in the shot sometimes up to four times."

What the video lacked in terms of spending was made up for in quality and its uniqueness.

"It is a low budget video. We shot this video from in the summer and we went to New York to do some colour editing and then come back and finish editing it. We did it in our own time, but worked on it dedicatedly to ensure a high quality final product. People say him (Rally Bop) don't buss yet, but we working on that because he is a very talented artiste," Jay Will argued.

The track was written by Rally Bop and produced by Smokey. Like R Kelly's Trapped In the Closet it is a continuous story that depicts the life of the five characters that Rally played. The Swing It Away artiste is now working on part two, which will soon be recorded.

The Story was released on the SmithMansion/Garrison label and will be distributed by Tuff Gong Records.

Rally Bop and his SmithMansion/Garrison label record mates have teamed up and called themselves Gwallas, which is said to mean 'movement' by Rally Bop. Thus far they have a new music video for their debut track, Beat It.

The Gwallas consists of Hollow Point, who is known in the dancehall circles for his witty lyrics and a superb musical flow that seem to replicate dancehall icon Super Cat.

Rally Bop, whose fame is attributed to his effort Swing It Away, which created quite a stir in the dancehall, and Golden Rama, who may not be widely known, but he is the talented son of Stone Love selector Rory.

Like The Story, the Beat It video and song is expected to create a stir in the entertainment industry.
