Five killed in separate incidents

Five persons were killed over the weekend in separate incidents, including two teenagers and a police constable.

The policeman, 34-year-old Carnel Lewis, was shot dead by gunmen in Mango Walk, St. James, on Saturday.

According to police reports, Constable Lewis and a female companion arrived at an apartment complex at about 3:50 a.m. where he reportedly saw a man whose actions aroused suspicion. He alighted from his vehicle, went to enquire and was pounced upon by three men who opened fire, hitting him several times. Further reports are that the men escaped, taking along with them the constable's licensed firearm and Honda CRV.

His female companion escaped unhurt but Lewis was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Montego Bay police are still investigating.

In the second incident, 17-year-old Freddie Higgins and 16-year-old Jason Grey, both of Spaulding Boulevard in Kingston 20, were shot and killed along Davidson Avenue on Saturday night.

Police reports are that at about 10:00 p.m., the teenagers were walking along the roadway when they were attacked and shot several times. Higgins reportedly died on the spot while Grey was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Duhaney Park C.I.B are investigating.

Also on Saturday evening, two men were shot, one fatally, by gunmen on Gordon Lane, Kingston 13.

The dead man has been identified as 33-year-old Michael Daley of Gordon Lane, while injured is a 25-year-old man.

The police report that at about 8:00 p.m., Daley was walking along Gordon Lane when he was attacked by two armed men who opened fire, hitting him several times. The other individual who was nearby was also hit.

The police were summoned and both men were taken to hospital where Daley was pronounced dead and the other man treated.

Detectives from the Denham Town C.I.B are investigating.

In the last incident, a taxi operator was shot and killed by gunmen in Norwood, St. James, on Saturday.

Dead is 46-year-old Samuel Humes, otherwise called 'Billy', from Hendon, Norwood.

According to the Constabulary Communication Network, Humes was operating his taxi along the Hendon main road when two men boarded his vehicle. On reaching a section of the main road, the two men made a demand for money. Their demand was not met and one pulled a firearm and opened fire, hitting Humes who lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a wall.

The men then escaped. Humes was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Montego Bay C.I.B are investigating.
