Roy 'Bugle' Thompson - Peta-Gaye Clachar
There are few entertainers who set themselves apart from the pack in the music industry within just a few short months. Bugle has done just that.
The entertainer has given notice that he is to be reckoned as one of the hottest new artistes of the year.
At 27, Bugle, real name, Roy Thompson, stands firm with years of experience in the business having started his career during his school days in Portland. It was because of his love for music that he was given the name Bugle, the clear sounding musical instrument, by his classmates.
Writing for Ele
At 15, Bugle tackled the streets of Kingston going from one studio to another. But it was when he hooked up with Anchor Studios and began writing for Elephant Man that his career really began.
"It was breathtaking talking to Elephant Man," he said. "Ele loved the song I wrote for him and we started to link up. I did some writing for him, I toured with him on the 'Good 2 Go' tour to Japan, Canada and all over the States," Bugle told The STAR.
After a while, writing for others was not enough for this eager artiste who decided to branch out on his own. He explains, "Song writing to me is the best way of expressing oneself. A lot of people can write but not a lot deliver it. Its great when you can write and deliver it."
Monster trio
After a brief stint with Shawn Scott Music Group (SSMG), Bugle soon accidentally hooked up with Serani of DASECA. Challenged with trying to impress the monster trio of producers, Bugle came up with the hit song What I'm Gonna Do (Exercise).
He hit the right note with the song and was soon signed to DASECA Productions. With DASECA, Bugle found his long-lost family in Producers Serani Marsh, and Craig and David Harrisingh. Within two weeks, he voiced more songs for them than he produced in his previous 10 years in the business.
Bugle says he has learnt many lessons within this short time. "They showed me that yuh can be the best writer and vocalist but if yuh don't have the right producers your talent is not found," he said.
His talent was found, however, and Bugle is trying to ensure that it stays in sight with another hit song on its way. Journey is a continuation of What I'm Gonna Do. Bugle promises that all his songs will continue to grow from there, only getting better.
One aspect that Bugle plans to focus on is his preoccupation with 'good music', that is, music with a lesson. "The other day I was in the studio and this eight-year-old girl came up to me and hugged me and started singing my song. Her mother said 'yuh see when artistes do good music'. That really touched me and is not the first time it's happened," Bugle said.
With that in mind, Bugle plans to continue turning out the hits, making his name known before focusing on making an album. In the meantime, his fans can look out for bigger and better things.
