Deadly depression

Crime has become so common in our country that we almost expect to hear about murders on the nightly news. Every so often, however, there comes a story that is so unusual and intriguing that it really gets us to pause and think, if only for a minute.

The story of Carol Waldron and her daughters is one such story. According to a front page story in The Sunday Gleaner, Miss Waldron checked into a Montego Bay hotel with her 14-year-old and three-month-old kids on Friday. Hotel employees heard strange sounds coming from their room and broke in to find all three dead. Waldron's wrists were reportedly slashed. It is believed the children were injected with potassium chloride.

Detailed suicide note

The story also said that Waldron had written a detailed suicide note, asking for forgiveness and explaining that she was having trouble with her marriage. Perhaps the most depressing aspect of this story is the fact that the children were involved. It is especially heart breaking to think of the innocent baby who was just brought into the world, only to be so brutally taken out, after just three months.

We may never understand what drove Waldron to commit these acts, and that is why depression is so deadly. Such a story emphasises the importance of proper mental health and the need for us to take such problems seriously. Depression is not just a phase that will miraculously disappear. It takes treatment.

What we should also learn from this story is that we need to pay attention to our friends and relatives and not overlook the clues that we are sometimes given.
