Psychiatric evaluation for stabber

By Rasbert Turner, STAR Writer

Spanish Town

A psychiatric evaluation was ordered by the court for Jermaine Beckford who is accused of stabbing the mother of his child more than 140 times.

Beckford, 25, allegedly, went to the house of his child's mother on September 15 to convince her to renew their relationship. When he did not get his way, he, reportedly, used a knife and also a metal fork to stab the woman all over her body.

The investigating officer, Constable Llewellyn Madden, told the court that Beckford turned himself in to the police and was subsequently charged with wounding with intent. However, defense attorney, Lancelot Clarke Jnr., told RM Lorna Errar-Gayle that it was an unfortunate situation and that he needed to communicate better with his client and for this to be done a psychiatric evaluation is needed. The court granted this request.

The complainant, who was also present, showed the RM several marks all over her body which, she claimed, were the result of the attack. She also presented a medical certificate which showed that she had keloid tendency which, the RM remarked, will result in plastic surgery and other procedures to correct the scars.

Beckford will return to court on November 15.
