The Editor: Sir,
We welcomed The Most Rev. the Rt. Hon. Dr. John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, who visited Jamaica shores recently.
To our understanding, the man, who represent the Anglican Church of England, is the first and only African to hold such a high position. His own historical past is quite interesting, being a brilliant scholar born in Uganda, Africa.
He reached the heights of High Court judge at age 24 in his birth country under the dictatorship of leader Idi Amin. He was also imprisoned for speaking out against Amin's regime according to him.
On reaching England, he changed course and attained a high position in the Anglican church.
However, at the convocation ceremony at the University of the West Indies, while being conferred with the degree of Doctor of Laws, his acceptance speech seemed very strange to me.
Why was he apologising for the Anglican church which participated in the slave trade?
Respect to Dr. Sentamu for being a son of Africa, but not for apologising on behalf of the Anglican church.
I am, etc.,
