Gerald Ramsey, a former member of the Jamaica Defence Force, who is facing charges of receiving stolen property and possession of forged documents, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Ramsey was charged after a Nissan Sunny motor car which was reported stolen in April 2002 was found in his possession. The court heard that back in 2002, the owner parked the motor vehicle at the Sovereign Centre and went away for a few minutes. When he returned the car was missing.
About two weeks ago, the Spanish police received information that the car was seen in the Ensom City area. They found the car there, and when they made enquiries were told that it belonged to a soldier. The vehicle was taken to the Spanish Town Police Station and Ramsey showed up later, claiming ownership. When he was questioned, he reportedly produced documents that, according to the police, were forged. They were reportedly in the owner's name. The court also heard that engine number of the car had been tampered with and the colour was changed from white to black.
Ramsey reportedly told the police that he had the car for over a year and bought from an individual whose name he provided to the police. This person has not been found.
Ramsey's lawyer, however, told the court that his client purchased the car and had provided the police with information about the person who sold it to him.
Bail was granted in the sum of $200,000 with surety and he is to return to court on December 5.
