TODAY IN HISTORY - October 31, 2005

THE GOVERNMENT of the Cayman Islands has not sugar-coated the imposition of visa requirement with diplomatic niceties. While the British colony relies heavily on Jamaican labour to help sustain its economic prosperity, it has become increasingly wary of the importation of crime from Jamaica.

After the Cayman Islands imposed a visa requirement on Jamaica, the Government threatened to retaliate by requiring visas for citizens of our former dependency, which still relies on Jamaicans for labour.

Now

The Jamaican Government made good on its threat to impose visa restrictions on Cayman Islands citizens, which seemed more of a revenge move by observers, rather than a need to keep out undesirables, especially since no such restrictions have been placed on U.S. and British citizens, on whose tourist dollars and investments our economy depends.
