IF apprentice Omar Walker thought Trevor Simpson would roll over and play dead after falling 12 winners behind in two racedays while on suspension, then he has no idea what he is up against in the 2007 race for the jockeys' championship at Caymanas Park.
Simpson, who booted home a three-timer last Saturday to reduce the deficit to 11 after Walker posted a double, is set to land at least four races tomorrow afternoon whereas his rival could notch a three-timer.
Simpson, a five-time champion, who holds the record for most wins in a year, 172, looks good aboard CLASSY BOY PETE in the 10th event for Open Allowance runners and also has a live chance with ROYAL KINGDOM in the seventh, the day's feature, Race Four of the second leg of the CTL Claiming Series.
The 38-year-old title-chasing rider also looks set to boot home a two-year-old double for Philip Feanny, debutant THE GREYT DOCTOR in the opening event and HONEY BUNNY in the third at 1100 metres.
Walker has now ridden 12 winners in three racedays, back-to-back five-timers followed by Saturday's double. His win streak has him on 71 winners to Simpson's 60.
The hot apprentice should land four-year-old debutant JAMMING in the fourth event at 1000 metres straight, hat-trick hunter NUMERO UNO in the fifth, as well as LANNY GIRL in the nightpan, also out of the straight.
Jackpots at $1.74million
With both riders in good form, punters hunting the $500,000 Super-6 and $1m Pick-9 jackpots should follow them to the death as no quarter will be given in the championship race.
There is also a $241,000 Hi-Five carryover to the fourth event in which Walker's JAMMING should start favourite after showing signs of ability at exercise.
POWERFUL BELLE at 12-1 was a major upsetter on Saturday's card, but Simpson took out many bets in the $200,000 payout when he landed PRINCESS LORNA at 5-2 in the sixth event.
CLASSY BOY PETE hasn't raced since June 27 but scorched the track last Friday morning, stopping watches in 1:06.2 for five and a half-furlong, the last five in 59.2
Last time out he won at the distance in a smart 1:19.4, beating ALPHA LUPA and MEDICAL REPORT.
ROYAL KINGDOM's last run, third behind COCK ROBIN and BONNIE'S VICTORY, should make him a five-star banker at 1800 metres for Simpson.
THE GREYT DOCTOR clocked 1:01.2 for five furlongs round last Tuesday morning, but will have to put every foot right against the experienced MISTER OFFICER as well as KIKO, who has also been working nicely in the mornings.
HONEY BUNNY chased MR SKILL into the lane in the 1200-metre Cash Pot Trophy and only lost third on the line. She returns treated with lasix against lesser lights and will have to be caught at 1100 metres.
As for Walker, his main threat to NUMERO UNO must be Feanny's SUN TANNED TOES, whereas LANNY GIRL need only repeat her second-place run to PRINCESS LORNA to beat rivals at 1000 metres straight in the nightpan.
