The Bishop Gibson High School choir. - Dwayne Mcleod
Due to technicalities which were not explained, the 10 remaining choirs in TVJ's All Together Sing choir competition were brought back to perform on Sunday night.
The choirs were required to perform selected 'contemporary' songs and they gave good performances.
Bishop Gibson High opened the night with a rendition of R. Kelly's I Believe I Can Fly. The choir's performance was well received by the judges who commended them for doing a good job. In general, the choir had a pleasant tone but were also told to work on keeping up their pitch.
Next came Aabuthnott Galli-more from the hills of St. Ann performing Roots. Their performance, however, needed much more work, as it was not properly done. Guest judge for the evening, actor/singer Cherine Anderson commended the lead singer but also said "the choreography was poor". The judges all agreed that the choir needed to find back their rhythm.
St. James High School was next and seemingly had little trouble with Bridge Over Troubled Waters. The girls in the choir were quite noticeable in their full black attire.
Their performance was, for most part, well done and the judges felt that the choreography matched the song. They were, however, encouraged to tighten up on their harmonies.
The choir voted into the top spot two weeks ago was Cornwall College and they showed why they were able to achieve that distinction. They chose Put A Little Love In Your Heart. The judges loved their rendition and thought their act was as colourful as their assortment of black, red and yellow shirts.
"Jamaica needs to hear guys singing," said judge Lawrence Wright.
Reggae medley
St. Catherine High School grabbed some attention with their medley of reggae tunes. Dressed in the colours of the Jamaican flag, the choir mixed TOK's Footprints, with Morgan Heritage's How Come and Gyptian's Serious Times to thrill the judges.
Judge Dwight Sanderson said "any choir that comes after you is gonna have a problem".
William Knibb High School followed with a performance which was arguably the best of the evening. The choir wowed the judges with Let's Unite In Love with a bass player providing good background music.
Bog Walk High School's cover of Tell Me How Come was a fair attempt, but the judges were disappointed with the delivery. The judges thought that the tempo of the song was too fast and mentioned that they did not like the way in which the song was performed.
Cherine Anderson thought that the group did not perform to the best of their talents.
Glenmuir's performance of a dance medley was outshone by the females 'blinging' tops. The choir was commended for an OK performance which judges thought was probably affected by their movements.
Papine High School's stint on stage saw them doing a dancing medley titled Dancehall Flex'. They mixed popular songs such as Elephant Man's Gangsta Rock and Dancing Fever by Voicemail to woo the judges.
Cherine Anderson noted that the "movements didn't distract from the performance".
Last up was Vauxhall High School. They performed Cherine Anderson's Kingston Stateof Mind.
The soloist was praised for her effort, but the judges thought she was not complimented by the other choir members. All three judges agreed that the pitch of the song was too low, but, however, lauded the group for a good job.
