Dwight Samuels, the Club Rocker. - File
On Sunday all the jokes were on the house, the Comedy Club, though a few did come from the bus. Sean DaCosta, however missed everything, being the first top ten casualty.
Among the jokers this week on the MiPhone/TvJ Comedy Buss competition was 'Club Rocker' Dwight Samuels. In his series of 'Imagine Ifs', Samuels poked fun at entertainers Beenie Man, Shabba Ranks, Bello and Tanya Stephens.
In his hit at Bouny Killer, he talked about Bounty buying 'Fed Ex' and merging it with 'UPS' to get 'Fed Up'. Being declared the Club Rocker for the third week Samuels says the recipe for his accomplishment is simple. "I just doing my homework and practising like crazy."
Carlos Austin also got some jokes in when he spoke of the 16-year-old who nearly gave her father a heart attack.
Devon Sterling's joke about the Mayor who refused to fix the sidewalk while his wife was 'falling down' was also a hit. Peter 'Time' Heslop's only appearance in Sunday's show came during Dufton Shepherd's performance.
But while the nine contestants gave a good showing, much of the excitement of the competition had to be experienced in the Comedy Club. This week was a full house, and the audience that braved the rain and gathered at the Television Jamaica studio was in for a treat.
Though judges, Winston 'Bello' Bell and Audrey Reid along with bus driver Christopher 'Johnny' Daley were up to their usual gimmicks, this week's audience included a whole host of comedians.
On the platform as guest judge was comedienne Elva Ruddock while in the Club were last year's winners Rohan Gunther, Danito 'Urkel' Fullwood, Leighton Smith and entertainer CeCile, the club was alive.
Gunther, in showing his prowess in wooing women showed the audience how he would 'lyrics' a Christian versus how he would 'lyrics' a university student. To the Christian he would say: "In the beginning was the heaven and earth. It is the beginning, you are heaven and will never be hurt".
But despite Gunther's lyrics it was Urkel who won CeCile and the audience over when among other promises he said, "If you a de chimney me a de rim. If I were kissing you it would be like Burger King, taste rules your way."
After the show, Elva commented on the acts, giving tips for the contestants. "The show was OK I think the show has stepped up over last year. Definitely some comedians there with potential and it can work. The Club Rocker, (Samuels) he was very comfortable on stage, his material flowed and him natural. (Tashawna Gayle) She's a natural, she naturally funny and she has a very animated delivery that works."
Her tips for the contestants: "Just be natural. Confidence, confidence, confidence. Even if you nuh memba yu material, even if you nuh have no material. If the crowd smells your fear yu dead, Even wid de best material in the world."
