Cabinet has awarded a contract valued at $31 million to Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Limited for the supply of computer equipment and software to the Jamaica Library Service.
"This is a programme designed to improve access to Internet and computer technology right across Jamaica by utilising the library network. The programme will go a great way in lessening the digital divide between the developed world and the developing world," Education Minister, Andrew Holness said at the (October 23) post-Cabinet press briefing held at Jamaica House.
The contract which is being funded by the Universal Access Fund will provide 333 desktop computers, 16 notebook computers, office productivity software, and cyber cafmanagement software to the Jamaica Library Service.
"This is excellent news for persons who use the library facilities, as now they will have Internet access and they will be able to use computers to improve their research and the work that they do in the libraries," Mr. Holness pointed out.
In the meantime, a contract valued at $15 million was awarded to W.G Walters Construction Company Limited to carry out expansion works at the St. Ann Parish Library.
"The St. Ann Parish Library is an important library in the network of libraries in that area, and indeed its usage has increased phenomenally over the past 10 years, and it became very important that we provide additional space," Mr. Holness explained.
Work will entail the construction of a reference room, a reading room, a computer room, as well as other minor facilities.
The project is being funded by the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education (CHASE) Fund and the Jamaica Library Service.
