A society gone wrong

Dwayne Mcleod, Staff Reporter

So my job has seen me venturing into some very deep, dark corners (literally), both in urban and rural areas. What can be said? It's the profession I chose and one that I love, I must admit.

My interactions with members of the scary criminal underworld has by all means brought upon me a wealth of knowledge which sometimes only makes me wonder.

In the latest of additions to my "street knowledge", I came to an understanding to that some individuals do indeed enjoy being a part of dangerous and often deadly circles.

On two recent occasions, I've witnessed so called "thugs" recalling and planning their illicit acts much to the laughter of fist-knocking of their partners in crime.

On one instant, while there was an ongoing feud within a Corporate Area community, men from the two opposing sides told their "gun tales", vocalising how they enjoyed going about their warring ways.

"Mi si di bway dem a screechy an a try come cross, so mi squeeze off one and dem stop an try si a weh di shot a come from, yu si when mi squeeze two more yu waa si man knee lif," said on man while his compadres laughed and made gestures of gun salutes.

In the second event, I had the chance of being in the presence of men from a community in rural Jamaica, while they planned to go on a robbing spree. What made this scenario so scary is that the men were also weighing their minds as to if they should carry along their weapons.

"Mi want a big food today ... A wonda mi a wonda if mi roll wi nuttin today, cause mi nuh really feel fi mash up nobady eno yu si mi," one so called thug said to another while he replied, "A dat mi wonda to still but maybe a bway might feel seh him naw go sen on weh mi ask fa so mi probly roll wid mi knife."

Cases such as these are reflections of a society often gone wrong.

Hence, it has become quite evident the depths of criminalism has, sad to say, stunted the vision and dreams of many, both young and old.

At such, it has become more than evident that sections of our society need some form of reform.

This may just well come in handy for the sake of those individuals who for whatever reason choose to live a life of crime and violence. In reality, it may save their lives as well as it just might save ours.
