Dancers' fashion over style

By Krista Henry, Staff Reporter

The duo of Chris and John Bling of Black Blingaz strikes a military pose in their signature 'tek weh yuself shirts'.

The STAR takes a look at the styles of the new 'fashion icons' of the dancehall, the dancers. If you know anything about dancers, you know that their outfits form part of their image. Today, take a look at the fashions of the 'Black Blingaz'.

A mixture of punk rock, goth and their unique style Black Blingaz embodies the saying 'fashion over style'. When the STAR visited their home recently at Angel's Grove in Spanish Town, Chris and John Bling showcased a few items from their wardrobe.

Shopping mainly in the United States, Black Blingaz frequents stores such as 'Hot Topic', 'H&M' among others to find their signature clothes.

According to Chris Bling, everyone in the group has a different 'flavour' but they all generally like the same things. For John Bling gothic is his look as he sometimes listens to rock groups such as Linkin Park and has t-shirts from groups such as 'The Used'. He also sports a chain on his wrist which is similar to the chain Bogle wore on his jeans.

John told the STAR, "We like to look different from other dancers and for different occasions. The most we wear di clothes is like two times, cause when people see it, yuh caan wear it again. Sometimes in Jamaica people see yuh in the gothic look and think you're a freak, mi nuh business wid wha people think."

The group prides itself on going the extra mile as they meticulously coordinated their looks from head to toe, with a bandanna tied around their necks to look like a 'bandelero'.

One thing that is well noted when looking on Black Blingaz is their crazy sneaker collection. The group has sneakers in all colours, patterns, bling and styles. For these dancers brand is not everything, as it is not 'the clothes that make the person but the person that makes the clothes'.

So impressive is the group's look, that the brand Rep Jamaica was inspired to put out a collection of t-shirts that emulated the Black Blingaz entitled 'Black Dem Out.'

The STAR team was also impressed as the two sported a halloween type hoody, a checkered outfit, a shirt with a tattooed sleeve, semi formal wear and an array of 'bling'.

Decked out in semi formal wear, the duo John and Chris Bling of Black Blingaz show off their dancing awards.
