Scenes from Short Shorts Party, at Taylor Hall, last Friday.
Taylor Hall's Outrage - Short Shorts Party, started out in an outrageous manner for THE STAR team members who arrived at the Students Union venue at 11:30 p.m. last Friday.
After waiting for over an hour to get in, when THE STAR team arrived inside, a party that was rather lukewarm greeted us.
The venue was far from full like at previous stagings and the vibes inside was just not present. One could have guessed this just from the length of the lines on the outside at midnight.
On the dance floor, located at the front, which was more populated than the one at the back, DJ Bambino was spinning and only a handful of patrons were responding. Even a hot dancehall favourite like Busy Signal's These Are The Days was just not stirring the patrons. On the back dance floor, the Renaissance selectors were spinning their hearts out but most of the patrons were just standing, while others were sitting or just chattering.

Another low point in this staging of the popular Short Shorts Party was the fact that all the selectors played identical sets. All the sets were laced with the same selections from Mavado, Munga Honourable, Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man and Bounty Killer. This created a monotonous feeling and helped to cripple the vibes.
On the front dance floor Bambino dropped Erup's Run Dem Head and managed to garner some response, he followed this up with Mavado's Touch Di Road, while using Munga to note "Mi neva hesitate to rise my own"
On the other dance floor the Renaissance selectors played T Pain's Buy You a Drank and Rihanna's Umbrella, but soon switched to the exact set DJ Bambino was playing on the other dance floor.
The only selector who played a slightly different set was Kurt 'The Party Animal' Riley, who took over selecting duties from Renaissance at 2:15 a.m. Kurt started out with Lenny Kravitz's Fly Away, then eased into Ashlee Simpson's Pieces of Me and immediately the patrons embraced the change.
He used Elephant Man to highlight that "Chi Chi man fi get kick inna face" before dropping Ward 21's Blood Stain and later TOK's Chi Chi Man. Kurt then unleashed Singer J's I Am Not Afraid (To Sh.t A Ba.t. Bwoy) and Cobra's Press Trigger to the first set of genuine forwards all night.
The party was now getting hot, but the lawmen had something else in mind and ordered its conclusion. This did not transpire though before Kurt wowed the patrons with Kartel's Dem Waan Fi War Mi and Junior Gong's There is Something for You before telling them: "A it this"
All in all the party was not great, but it was not the worst event one could have gone to. However, when compared to its predecessors it was lacking in vibes, energy and turnout.
