Great performances by 'Fantastic Four'

By Teino Evans, Staff Reporter

It is now down to the wire, as the final four contestants in the Digicel Rising Stars 2007 competition face off for the coveted number one spot, one million dollars and other prizes.

Last Sunday, 'the fantastic four', as hostess Denise Hunt described them, took the stage, not once, but twice, to give judges and studio audience a double dose of their talent. They were required to perform a hit from the year they were born and then return to do a current hit from either 2006 or 2007.

Lenya

'No, No, No!' sings Lenya Wilks as she tackles Amy Winehouse's 'Rehab'.

Lenya Wilks was first to take the stage, announcing that her 1990 hit would be to Make It Like It Was by Regina Bell.

The judges loved her performance. Nadine Sutherland said, "This song would show off Lenya and the extent of her talent."

Clyde McKenzie was even more intrigued as he said, "If this is what the first serving is, I'm looking forward for seconds."

And Anthony Miller said, "She has an emotional depth and talent ... Flawless performance."

Inga

Inga Stewart gives her first lacklustre performance in the competition.

Inga Stewart was up next, announcing that her hit would come from "the late seventies", as she went Crazy with Lorretta Lynn's number.

However, judges Anthony Miller and Clyde McKenzie were not that 'Crazy' about Stewart's performance, as Miller said, "I didn't think that performance worked at all," while McKenzie said "there was a pitching problem towards the end".

Nadine Sutherland showed a little more compassion towards Stewart though, as she felt Inga did well, especially in light of the fact that she was feeling sick.

Jodi-Ann

Jodi-Ann Pantry's 1989 selection made judges and members of the studio audience Feel Like Jumping, as she did justice to Marcia Griffith's song.

Anthony Miller said, "For once I didn't think she was going through the motions; I was entertained and she has began to entertain us finally."

Romain

Romain Virgo, the only male left in the competition, will try to hold on this week.

Romain Virgo's performance of a Maxi Priest song from 1990 might allow him to be in the competition Just A Little Bit Longer, as he tries to hang on as the only remaining male competitor.

Nadine Sutherland said, "I thought that song really suited you," while Clyde McKenzie felt "it might not be your strongest song to date, but everybody knows you are a good singer".

Anthony Miller, however, thought that his performance was "okay, ordinary".

The second wave of performances saw not only a change in attire, but also in attitude for some.

Lenya Wilks was hilarious with her gimmicks in Rehab and Inga Stewart went Below The Waist which really pleased the judges.

However, Jodi-Ann Pantry's Umbrella might have had a leak in it, because even though Nadine and Clyde liked her rendition, Anthony Miller said, "silly song, no spark".

Romain Virgo's reggae medley on the Seasons rhythm was refreshing for the studio audience, as he had them singing songs that were Far From Reality and asking How Come.

Anthony Miller, however, said "good song selection and performance, but he sounded a little forced".
