No bail for prominent St Catherine businessman

Rasbert Turner, STAR Writer

Spanish Town, St. Catherine

A St. Catherine businessman who is charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition was remanded when he appeared in the Spanish Town RM Court on Tuesday.

Charged with illegal possession of a Glock pistol and 82 rounds of ammunition is 33-year-old John Markland, otherwise known as 'Briggie' of a Green Acres address in St. Catherine.

When he appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar-Gayle, his lawyer, K. Churchill-Neita, made an unsuccessful bail application although he said Markland was a well-known figure to the police in the parish, and has a fixed address. He was remanded until September 6, when he will again appear in court.

His appearance in court arose from an August 6 incident where the police, upon investigating an offence, were taken by the accused to his house where he allegedly picked up the weapon near a tree. He allegedly took the weapon to them and was subsequently charged by the lawmen.
