15-y-o cops batsman's prize at Digicel clinic

Shawn Singh, a 15-year-old right handed batsman of Kingston Community High School in the capital city copped the most outstanding batsman's prize at the conclusion of the Digicel Cricket Coaching Clinic at Bourda on Sunday.

Singh won himself an autographed bat as did the most outstanding bowler Jamal Taylor and the most outstanding fielder Dayanand Roopnarine.

Dexter Solomon of South Sophia won the most outstanding wicketkeeper award and also collected an autographed bat. The bats were autographed by West Indies captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin, legendary former off spinner Lance Gibbs and former players turned coaches Kenny Benjamin and Keith Arthurton.

Twelve year-old right arm fast bowler Latoya Smith was adjudged, ahead of four other participants, as the most outstanding female player and she too won an autographed bat but her prize is autographed by the entire current West Indies cricket team.

Phone for birthday boy

The highlight of the presentation ceremony though was birthday boy Loyydel Lewis of Corentyne who celebrated his 13th birthday Sunday and was presented with a cake and a mobile phone by Digicel. Adding to the excitement for the surprised youngster was the fact that the phone was presented to him on behalf of Digicel by Sarwan.

The fourth of Digicel's region-wide Cricket Coaching Clinic came to a successful end after the participants engaged in three friendly ten over-a-side games and president of the Guyana Cricket Board and director of the West Indies Cricket Board, Chetram Singh urged the regional mobile services giant to continue the programme while thanking the company for the thoughtful initiative which will assist with the development of young talent.

Sarwan too was full of praise for the initiative recalling that it was at a young age that he began to look to cricket as a serious career path.

"I want to thank the parents for coming out and I want to urge them to continue supporting the youngsters because with their support they can go a far way in the game, the support of the parents is very important," Sarwan pointed out.

All the participants received special gift packs from Digicel inclusive of backpack, t-shirts and cap. Each of the participants also received an autographed photograph of all the participants of the clinic. More than fifty participants were selected to participate in the clinic from over one thousand young aspiring cricketers who swarmed Bourda on Friday for the audition.

The next leg of the Digicel Cricket Coaching Clinic takes place in St Vincent this week and the final leg will follow in Antigua.
