A cheeky goal by Nicholas McCreath and a lucky toe poke by Damion Gordon in the final minute gave Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS) a 5-4 win over Ballaz in the final of the Catherine's Peak Independence Five-A-Side Beach Football Competition at the Barbican playing field yesterday.
BNS, who had thrashed Tank Weld 6-3 in their semi-final thanks to a hat-trick from McCreath, took home $50,000 while Ballaz bagged $25,000. Ballaz had edged Morgan's Path 2-1 in their semi-final.
After two quick goals put Morgan's Path ahead 4-3, McCreath who finished with 13 goals in the two-day competition, lobbed the ball over Ballaz's goalie Julian McLeish for the equaliser. Gordon, then got a toe to the ball during a goalmouth scramble.
Gordon, who scored four goals against Ballaz, was named MVP for the final while McCreath was MVP for the tournament. BNS's Ludwick Leith was the top scorer with 15 goals.
The women's competition was contested by only two teams, with Barbican getting the better of Maverley 5-1 and earning $5,000 in the process.
