Nelson set to break into top 10

Jimmie, Star Racing Writer

JOCKEY Dane Nelson should race into the top-10 standings in style tomorrow afternoon as he has a three-timer lined-up on the nine-race card including DON DON for trainer Patrick Chang in the fifth at 1300 metres, Race I of the second CTL Claiming Series.

Nelson, who will start the day on 15 wins for the season, should quickly move to 16 aboard NUMERO UNO in the opening event, joining apprentice Harriston Lewis at the foot of the top-10 standings before increasing his tally astride BUCK THE MINISTER in the fourth at 1200 metres.

Chang tried to pull off a big coup with DON DON on May 26 with Nelson aboard. Racing out of Chang's barn after winning a month earlier on a $210,000 tag for Donovan Raymond, DON DON tried to steal a march at a mile, at odds of 69-1.

However, he was overhauled by POORLITTLERICHBOY and eventually finished third with STREET FIGHTER closing for second.

DON DON has raced twice since, among non-winners-of-three, racing prominently in races in which champion trainer Wayne DaCosta's BELLA IN BLOOM went off as the favourite but disappointed.

Having again lowered his sights to $210,000 claiming, DON DON, now reunited with Nelson, looks set to land the gamble.

The distance of 1300 metres is right up his street, and he should take charge early as his six rivals lack consistency and appear suspect where fitness is concerned.

TYRONE SON, who placed fourth behind NIJINSKY'S WAR when stepping up in class off a claim on June 2, could be a dangerous contender.

SIXTH SENSE, who was hindered at the start and finished five and a quarter-length seventh in Saturday's 11th event won by ME LLAMO, must not be taken lightly.

He was only two lengths behind return winner NIJINSKY'S WAR in his previous race and was far from disgraced in fourth behind TOUCHDOWN on June 2, prior to being caught close home by NEUTRALIZER on May 12.

Jackpots at $1.7m

UNCLE D & ME stormed home at odds of 20-1 in Saturday's ninth event to wreck most Super-6 and Pick-9 bets late in the afternoon.

The Pick-9 is back at its $1m guarantee, starting at the first event whereas the Super-6, which has a carryover of $781,166, will open at the fourth.

Nelson should get the ball rolling for Pick-9 players with NUMERO UNO as the five-year-old gelding relishes the distance and small fields.

Post position two in a six-horse line-up at 1000 metres straight should see NUMERO UNO battling it out with RIZZI LEE, who has speed but would prefer a milder pace.

The other speed horse in the event, PSYCHEDELIC, continues to train well but seemingly prefers the round course.

NUMERO UNO closed well for third at the distance behind TALLAWAH from post-position one in an 11-horse field when last out.

BUCK THE MINISTER, who finished third in his last three races, has a grand chance to get off the mark in the fourth and with Nelson aboard for his last four runs, he should now go one better.

Track Price Plus Pick-6 players should round off their bets with SHOWDOWN in the sixth, RIGGED TO WIN in the seventh and EXPLOSIVE PEAK in the Open Allowance sprint at 1000 metres straight.
